25 celebrates a milestone: twenty-five years of Prairie Quills Writers’ Group.
What began in November 1999 with five students and a facilitator from an adult writing class in Swift Current, Saskatchewan, has grown into a vibrant literary community spanning the province’s southwest.
For a quarter century, Prairie Quills has nurtured writers through critique sessions, workshops with award-winning authors, and ambitious outreach programs like readings at seniors’ facilities and youth writing competitions. The group’s commitment shows in the numbers: published authors have grown from 10% to 85% of membership.
This anniversary anthology showcases that range. Twelve stories, each sparked by the number 25, move from second chances and old flames to war, mystery, and the supernatural. A woman meets her high school boyfriend in a dim bar. A WWI soldier faces chaos at Kitcheners’ Wood. Strange lockers open to other worlds. Characters confront regrets, navigate relationships under pressure, and encounter the uncanny in everyday life.
25 is both a celebration and a creative proving ground. This collection honours the group’s history while demonstrating what two and a half decades of dedication, community, and craft can build. These stories affirm who Prairie Quills writers are: diverse voices united by commitment to the work and to each other.
